If there’s one thing I’ve learnt in over 10 years running my own business, it’s that it is bloody tough.  Even if you are passionate about what you do, there are always good days AND bad days.  Days when you question yourself and every decision you make. Should I be spending this much time away from my kids?  Am I being a good enough wife, mum, friend?  Am I being selfish? Am I making good business decisions?

As women we are highly critical of ourselves and often not happy with who we are.  And it’s easy to get bogged down in that stuff.

Whenever I have those thoughts, I try to stop and focus on how lucky I am to have had the opportunity to build my own dream business.  To make my own decisions.  To choose how and when I want to work.  Because if it wasn’t for the women who came before us, the ones that had the drive, courage and determination to pave the way for female independence and equality, I wouldn’t even be able to have a bad day at the office.

Which is actually a great day if you look at it from that perspective.

Not only do I feel lucky to get out of bed and do what I love every day.  Through my headshot and branding photography I also get to help other women create successful businesses, and through my family photography I get to help women celebrate everything in life that is close to their heart.

And that is what I’m truly passionate about.

We still have a long way to go.  There are still countries that don’t allow girls to go to school.  Countries that force women into arranged marriages they don’t want. Or into jobs that demoralise and devalue them.

And we should never stop fighting for the rights of those women.

But just for today, let’s focus on celebrating how far we have come, and the women who have made it happen. And the opportunity we have to make things even better for the women to come after us.
